An equipment malfunction is being blamed for the loss of power to thousands of FirstEnergy customers in Elyria and Sheffield Lake.
It’s estimated that around 7,000 people in Lorain County were without power this morning. The majority are in Sheffield Lake, but more than 2,000 customers were without power in Elyria as well. Power had been restored to most customers by around 2 p.m.
The Lorain County Justice Center is currently closed to the public because of the power outage. It is operating on backup power, and attorneys and employees may enter the building. All divisions of Common Pleas Court are closed for the day.
Social media posts from Elyria schools say Franklin Elementary and Elyria High School were impacted by the outage, but school remains in session.
