AVON — Community members, leaders and students welcomed the new Meijer store Tuesday morning.
The new store, at Nagel Road and Interstate 90, opened at 7 a.m. as one of three Meijer stores that opened Tuesday. The other two stores are in Mentor and Stow, and all three are open 24 hours.
Ken Barclay, Michigan-based Meijer’s Cleveland market director, said Avon was chosen by Meijer because of its potential to fit a local demand.
“It just really fits our footprint, and it’s just a niche we could fill in our community,” he said.
The 155,000-square-foot store has fresh produce, deli, bakery and pharmacy in addition to groceries. The Avon store also has a gas station, which opened a last month.
The store has about 350 employees with 30 as team leaders and the rest as team members. About 60 percent of the employees are full-time.
“It’s a great addition to our community, the store has been in the works for a while, and the people have been waiting for this store to open for a long time since (Meijer) decided to become an Avon store,” said City Council President Craig Witherspoon.
In addition to the grand opening, Hendrik Meijer, co-chairman and CEO of the
family-owned Meijer organization, presented a $10,000 donation to Avon High School and a $20,000 donation to Community Resource Services. Meijer also announced that 6 percent of the store’s profits are being donated
to groups and resources throughout the community. The donation is something the company does in every location where there is a store.
A second Meijer store is in the planning for the site of the former Super Kmart in Lorain. The retail chain opened its first Ohio store in the Columbus area in 1981, and now has 42 locations in the state.
