LORAIN — Five people were injured in a boating accident Monday evening.

First responders were called to a possible capsized boat with five people in the water on Lake Erie north of Beaver Park shortly after 5 p.m. When Lorain police and the Coast Guard arrived, the boat was righted and all five were in the vessel, according to Lorain police Officer Brent Payne.

Of the five injured, three were critical. All were taken to Mercy Hospital in Lorain.

Payne said the single-boat accident occurred north of Beaver Park — near the 5300 block of West Erie Ave. — four to five minutes west of Hot Waters Marina where the group was believed to have launched from.

Lorain Fire Department initially was called for the boat, thought to be about 2 miles out from shore, according to Assistant Chief Matt Homolya. The Fire Department does not have a boat, prompting a call to Lorain police, which has a marine patrol.

The investigation was turned over to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Watercraft office out of Cleveland.

Further information, including the cause of the crash or condition of victims, was not known Monday evening.
