Mercy Hospitals donates land for new fire station

LORAIN — The city has secured the land for its new west side fire station after a donation from Mercy Health Lorain Hospital.

The hospital donated 2.17 acres at West Erie Avenue and Kolbe Road for the new station. City Council voted to approve the donation, and the fire station is set to be completed in 2020.

Mayor Joe Koziura said the west side station will be built with funds from the fire levy passed in November 2016. He said part of the conditions of the levy were building new west side and east side fire stations. The east side station is under construction.

Once the new station is built, Koziura said the firefighters will relocate from the fire station on West Park Drive to the new facility. He said the building the firefighters are in was converted to be used by the fire station a number of years ago and never was up to par for what the firefighters need.

Koziura said he appreciated the hospital donating the land, saying it will give the city the room it needs to configure the new station properly.

Mercy Health Lorain Hospital CEO Edwin Oley said the donation is part of why Mercy Health is an “integral piece of the fabric of Lorain.”

“It’s partnerships and collaborations such as this that allows organizations to enhance their bandwidth and continue to make a difference in the lives of those we each serve,” Oley said.

The new station will be one of four stations, including the new east side station, central station and south Lorain station.
