Pretrial for man accused in dog beating moved to October

VERMILION — A pretrial has been continued in Vermilion Municipal Court for a man on charges alleging he beat a dog he was watching.

Brian Carrick, 30, faces charges of cruelty to animals, a first-degree misdemeanor, as well as disorderly conduct, a fourth-degree misdemeanor, after being caught on a security camera in the owner's home.

Police said the camera caught Carrick repeatedly beating the dog while the owner and his family were camping June 23. The video -- captured by a nanny-cam in the house -- shows the man beating the dog several times with a wooden paddle as well as yelling.

The owner's neighbor told police she heard the dog being struck and added that Carrick seemed intoxicated, according to a police report.

Carrick's pretrial will continue Oct. 8 at 2 p.m., according to the Vermilion Municipal Clerk of Courts.
