A serious knee injury ended Tracy Sprinkle’s football season before it got going last year.

It didn’t stop his giving spirit.

Sprinkle, an Ohio State defensive tackle and Elyria High School graduate, was named Tuesday to the preseason watch list for the Wuerffel Trophy. The award is given to the FBS player who best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement.

Sprinkle’s community service includes: working at the Nationwide Children’s Hospital telethon; spending an afternoon with kids at the Martin Luther King Arts Complex; packing boxes of food at the LifeCare Alliance and the Mid-Ohio Foodbank on multiple occasions; visiting numerous schools to read to second-graders as part of the 2nd and 7 Foundation; visiting patients at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center; and completing outreach efforts at Linden McKinley and with the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

He graduated in May with a degree in family resource management.

Sprinkle is coming back from a torn right patellar tendon suffered in the opener last year, his first start for the Buckeyes. He missed the rest of the season but is expected to compete for a starting job this year as a fifth-year senior.

The award is named after 1996 Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Danny Wuerffel.
