LORAIN – Police are investigating a Sunday incident involving a toddler found in critical condition.
Officers arrived at the Mercy Regional Medical Center’s emergency room, where they had been dispatched to examine suspicious injuries on a 3-year-old boy brought in, according to a news release.
The boy’s mother reportedly brought him into the emergency room, according to hospital staff. The mother told a 911 dispatcher that she found the child unresponsive after being pushed over a diaper box by his 1-year-old brother.
Staff called the police because the boy’s injuries didn’t match with the mother’s explanation, according to the news release. The boy was transferred to MetroHealth Medical Center, and police said he was in extremely critical condition.
Officers are investigating the incident as a deliberate assault on the child. No one has been charged at this time, but police said charges are expected.
Det. Tabitha Angello, the lead investigator for the incident, said police may release more information Wednesday.
