This story has been edited to reflect the following correction: The man was driving a newer Chevrolet Impala.
A Harvard Avenue girl told her parents — who then told police — that a suspicious man tried to talk to her while she was outside Monday night.
Elyria police Lt. James Welsh said around 8 p.m., a girl in the 200 block of Harvard Avenue was playing outside when a car, believed to be a black newer Chevrolet Impala, drove past multiple times. The girl’s mother also saw the car drive past multiple times, and a neighbor estimated it drove past 10-12 times.
At one point, the driver, described as an obese black man in his 30s, asked the girl’s name. She gave a false name, and ran inside and told her parents, who then called police.
Welsh said they have a partial license plate for the car, and are trying to find the car and driver. There will be increased patrols in the Eastern Heights neighborhood, particularly around school dismissal time this afternoon,
“Obviously, anytime we have someone trying to entice a juvenile for information, we take it very seriously,” Welsh said.
The Elyria school district alerted parents with a robocall around 9:15 a.m.
