ELYRIA — A 20-year-old man accused of raping a 5-year-old girl was grounded for three months by his mother after confessing to her what he had done, according to court documents.

Timothy Minnich, of Elyria, was indicted on three counts of kidnapping and two counts of rape by a Lorain County grand jury earlier this month. Minnich was arrested by Elyria police last month after the child’s mother reported her suspicions to police.

Minnich was being held on $1 million bond in Lorain County Jail, and he has filed a motion for bond reduction, according to court records. On Tuesday, the Lorain County Prosecutor’s Office filed a brief in opposition to the motion to modify bond detailing why the state doesn’t want the bond changed.

The court documents said that police have a recorded interview with Minnich, which occurred after he had been read his Miranda warning. In the interview, Minnich “described in substantial detail the setting and how he came to be alone with (the alleged victim) and his thought process behind deciding to ‘go for it,’” court documents said.

Minnich also told police that he stopped sexually assaulting the girl because “he knew it was wrong,” court documents said.

During the interview with Elyria police, Minnich also told detectives “that he had told his mother … that he had sex with (the alleged victim).” His mother then “responded by grounding Minnich for three months but not taking any other action such as reporting the situation to Children Services” or notifying the child’s mother, court documents said.

Because of the age of the alleged victim, Minnich faces a minimum of 15 years in prison and up to a life sentence, court documents said.

A plea of not guilty by reason of insanity has been filed on his behalf. He is scheduled to be arraigned in Lorain County Common Pleas Court this morning, according to court records.
