VERMILION — A Vermilion man was arraigned Tuesday in Vermilion Municipal Court on charges alleging he beat a dog he was watching.
Brian Carrick faces charges of cruelty to animals, a first-degree misdemeanor, as well as disorderly conduct, a fourth-degree misdemeanor, after being caught on a security camera in the owner’s home.
Police said the camera caught Carrick repeatedly beating the dog while the owner and his family were camping June 23. The video shows the man beating the dog several times with a wooden paddle as well as yelling.
Tucker’s neighbor told police she heard the dog being struck and added that Carrick seemed intoxicated, according to a police report.
Jason Tucker, the owner of the dog, came to court, but Carrick’s appearance was done out of the courtroom through an attorney. Tucker said he was shocked to learn about what Carrick had done to his dog. Tucker said he watched his children as well as other people’s dogs without any complaints.
“He was a good friend, but not anymore. That’s about it,” he said.
Carrick’s new court date is not yet scheduled, according to the Vermilion Municipal Clerk of Courts.
