Republican Nathan Manning will be moving from the Ohio Statehouse to the Ohio Senate after defeating Democrat Sharon Sweda and Libertarian Homer Taft for the 13th District seat.
Manning, who has served in the Ohio State House’s 55th District since 2015, will replace his mother, Gayle Manning, who was term limited. Nathan Manning received 53 percent of the vote with 67,796 votes in Tuesday’s election, while Sweda received 44 percent and Taft received 3 percent, according to unofficial results.
“I’m just really honored to have the support of the people of Lorain and Huron counties,” Manning said. “We worked really hard and had a great grassroots campaign. We knocked on over 31,000 doors, and I’m just really proud of the work we put in. I think it really showed in the results.”
Sweda said there’s nothing that she can point to in her campaign that she would do any different.
“We stayed high when they went low. I had to make a conscious decision when they started making all the attack ads,” Sweda said. “I really wrestled with it because he’s got baggage and he had garbage to work with. My feeling was I didn’t get in this to sling mud. You never wrestle with a pig because if you wrestle in the mud, you get dirty.”
Sweda also felt she outworked Manning in the campaign.
“There’s never been a harder working candidate, but then that means there’s never been a harder working team, either,” Sweda said. “My team really put it all out there; we put it all out there. I felt that we could be outspent, but we couldn’t be outworked. That’s how I live my life.”
Manning said he felt Sweda worked “extremely hard” during the campaign which he “definitely respects.”
Manning said he believes he’s prepared for the new job.
“I’m proud of the last four years working in the House,” he said. “I’ve been able to be a chair and had a lot of control in the Criminal Justice Committee. Going in, you’re a rookie, but at the same time you at least have a lot of experience and have a relationship with a lot of the people that are over in the Senate. There’s going to be a lot of new things, but at the end of the day, I think I’m going to be able to hit the ground running and do a really good job for Lorain and Huron counties.”
