Elyria’s Marques Inman and Elyria Catholic’s Sean Darmafall could not be more different physically.
Inman is a big, strapping power hitter, 6-foot-2 with a powerlifter’s build and the ability to hit baseballs a long way.
Darmafall is a few inches shy of 6-0, with a wiry physique. He’s a line-drive hitter that pounds the outfield gaps and relies on above-average speed to move around the bases.
Tuesday, however, they were given the same honor by the Ohio High School Baseball Coaches Association: first-team All-Ohio.
Inman, a first baseman, made it in Division I, while Darmafall, an outfielder, is a Division III selection.
Other area players were also honored.
Seniors Brandon Bartlome (Lorain), Rees Rua (Amherst) and Ryan Hanna (Olmsted Falls) were honorable mention in Division I, while Clearview’s Antonio Bennett (infield) and Vermilion’s Josh Buchanan (utility) were second team and Keystone’s Aaron Brodnik honorable mention in Division II. Elyria Catholic senior outfielder Noah Bland made honorable mention in Division III.
“This means the world to me,” said Inman, a senior who has accepted a scholarship to play college baseball at West Virginia University. “Since my freshman year it’s been a goal to be all-state, and it’s a great feeling to know one of my goals has happened.
“I have to give so much credit to my father, Mark. I wouldn’t be anything if not for him. He’s been my rock through everything and I’ll never be able to thank him enough for how much he’s meant to me. He’s always been there to work with me, encourage me and push me when I needed it.”
Inman hit .400 this season with 10 doubles, three triples and a home run. He drove in 20 runs and stole 12 bases while striking out just 10 times.
Darmafall, a junior, led the Panthers in most offensive categories from his leadoff position. He hit .452 (47-for-104) with eight doubles, three triples, a home run, 24 RBIs, 39 runs and 39 stolen bases. He struck out just seven times.
Darmafall also gave his father, Mike, a lot of the credit for his success on the baseball field. He also thanked his mother, Candace.
“This is a great honor and I have been blessed to be able to see my hard work pay off like this,” Darmafall said. “My parents are the reasons I work this hard … my father, Mike, especially. He’s always made me work hard because he has always seen the potential in me. I’m very thankful for the faith my parents have shown in me.”
Darmafall thinks how the teams are selected is important.
“The fact that this was voted on by the coaches means a lot to me,” he said. “It means the people that are always trying to get their players to work and improve have seen something in me that they like. I hope they recognized my hard work and total love of the game.”
It could be a big week for Inman with Major League Baseball’s amateur player draft beginning Monday. Scouts could be found at most Elyria games down the stretch this season and Inman is projected to be selected as high as the ninth round.
Despite hitting just one home run this season, Inman, who was pitched around a lot, hit seven in his high school. With his large frame and powerful wrists, he’s considered one of the top power-hitting high school prospects in the country.
