ELYRIA — After a blowout win over Mansfield Madison in the first round, the Midview Middies had their hands full with No. 2 seed Fremont Ross in the regional quarterfinals of the Division I dual team tournament at Elyria High on Wednesday night.

Midview built an early lead, the Little Giants roared back to go up 31-30 after 195 pounds and the third-seeded Middies won the last two matches to escape with a 42-31 victory.

“There’s lots of anxiety. There’s a twist of emotions. It was pretty crazy,” said Midview heavyweight Daniel Bucknavich, whose pin at 285 secured the win. “I felt the pressure. I knew if I got pinned we lost, and I wouldn’t live that down. I knew I had to get him.

“I used the bundle to get the pin. I’ve been working on it a lot at practice. With the bigger guys, you can just roll them over.”

The Middies will face top-seeded Elyria next Wednesday in the regional semifinals. The Pioneers earned a bye in the first round and then rolled to a 52-16 win over Ashland in the quarterfinals.

First-round action saw Ashland beat Avon 41-22, Midview beat Madison 71-9 and Fremont Ross beat Lorain 49-22.

“We came out ready, and that’s the most important thing, you always have to be ready,” Elyria senior Joshua Breeding said. “(Elyria coach Erik Burnett) Burnie always tells us to never underestimate our opponent, never act like we’re the better team, we always have to treat our opponents with respect.”

The Arrows may beg to differ about the Pioneers’ definition of respect.

Elyria opened with five match wins — four garnered bonus points — lost at 138 pounds and then won six more matches to take a 52-4 lead.

“You’ve got to get bonus,” Burnett said. “In dual meets there are an even number of matches. If you split the matches — seven and seven — the team that gets the bonus wins. So you always have to be hungry for bonus and you have to be looking for it all the time as far as putting combinations together.”

Dylan Shawver (113), Brendon Fenton (120) and Breeding (132) earned pins, while Mick Burnett (126) picked up a major decision during Elyria’s 25-0 start.

Later in the match, Erik Burnett decided to let junior Haydon Rockman wrestle at 160 and bump freshman Jake Evans up to 170. Rockman earned an 8-2 decision over Gage Adkins and Evans pinned Jakob Beverly in 1:37.

“They both weighed in at 160, and Jake has a history with Beverly at 170 so we felt like he had a good shot there,” Burnett said. “So we left Haydon at 160 and thought that he did a great job there.”

Midview also took an early lead in its match against Fremont Ross, with Jameson Shenberger (106) getting a pin, Avery Snyder earning a technical fall and Zak Anderson winning a 9-3 decision to make it 14-0.

Fremont Ross then rallied — overcoming technical falls by James Hutchinson (138) and Cameron Honis (152) and a forfeit victory by Trever Begin (182) — to take the one-point lead after Caleb Wood downed Seth Frambach in overtime.

“We had a tough one at 195,” Middies coach Shawn Bristow said. “I know that kid beat us at Brecksville and Frambach wanted some revenge. It was tight. (Frambach) was in on his legs a couple times and couldn’t finish it.

“But we are very satisfied with the guys tonight. We’ve been stressing bonus points and the guys fought a lot harder tonight, from their backs and from different positions. This is the farthest we’ve been, so we’re really proud of the guys.”

The Midview coaches weren’t the only ones who were impressed.

“Midview’s banging, man,” Burnett said. “They’ve been working hard and they are in a great position right now. So, yeah, great for Lorain County … our programs do a lot of work together and we respect each other a lot, and (next week) it should be a great match.”
