Wendell Joseph Painley, 87, of Elyria, passed away unexpectedly Saturday, January 20, 2018 at Avon Cleveland Clinic, following a short illness. Wendell was born in Uniontown, Pennsylvania on August 27, 1930.
He proudly served with the United States Army. He was a letter carrier for the U.S. Post Office and after his retirement he drove for Majoris Livery. He was a member of Washington Avenue Christian Church, a 50 year member of the American Legion Post 12 and he golfed with the Legion League. He enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and especially attending his granddaughter's activities.
Surviving him are his wife, Shirley (nee Wahl); two children, Rebecca (Tom) Bechtel of Bay Village and Brian Painley of Elyria; four granddaughters, Hallie, Olivia and Alexandra Bechtel and Ashley Painley and two sisters, Bernadette Russell of Uniontown and Celeste (Jim) Trump of Brockport.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Elizabeth (nee Platcho) and Steve Painley.
A memorial service will be held at Washington Avenue Christian Church, 301 Washington Avenue, Elyria on Monday, February 12, 2018 at 11:30 A.M., where friends will be received from 10:30 A.M. until the time of services. The Reverend Janet Long will officiate. The VFW Post 1079 will provide full Military Honors at the memorial service. A private family burial take place at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery.
At the family's request, no flowers and desire memorial contributions in his honor to The Washington Avenue Christian Church or to Wreaths Across America in honor of Veterans.
