Norene "Betty" Justen

It is with great sadness the Justen family announces the passing of Norene Virginia "Betty" Justen, 92. She died peacefully on Tuesday, August 21, 2018 holding the loving hands of her children and family in Warrenton, Virginia of natural causes. Norene was born June 20, 1926 in North Braddock, Pennsylvania and was the of daughter of James G. Scott and Wilda Pearl Lybarger. She grew up in Elyria and is survived by two of her five siblings, her sisters, Evelyn Hintz and Nancy Murray, the youngest.

After graduating from Elyria High School 1946 and working at Neisners's Department Store, she fell for her sweetheart, Kenneth Justen, while they became pen pals during WWII. The couple were married the following year on April 6, 1946 at United Presbyterian Church in Elyria. Norene and Ken were happily married for 51 years until his death in 1997.

In addition to being a devoted wife and mother, Norene was very talented and loved all types of crafts, sewing and needlework. She was always making an afghan or quilt for friends and family. Known for her love of cooking and baking, her grandchildren thought she made the best chocolate chip cookies and iced brownies in the world. Norene loved holidays and family get togethers: spending time with family was very important to her. Norene was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church and the American Legion Post 12 Auxiliary of Elyria. Norene would often surprise you with her sassy side and many loved her feisty, yet good sense of humor. She had a loving and generous heart and was always giving to others. Now this kind and very gentle soul, has passed from Earth to Heaven. She will be deeply missed by all those that knew and loved her.

She leaves her loving memories to be cherished by her children, Thomas Justen, Bettie Phillips, Dan and Barb Justen, Peter and Darcy Justen and her deceased son, Ken Justen, Jr. She has touched the lives of 20 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren that all loved and adored her.

Family and friends will gather at the Reichlin-Roberts Funeral Home, 327 Cleveland St., Elyria on Sunday, August 26th, 2018 for visitation from 1 until 4 P.M. Closing prayers will be held at the funeral home Monday, August 27th, 2018 at 10 A.M. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 A.M. at St. Agnes Church, 160 Lake Ave., Elyria, with The Reverend Father Albert Veigas, Pastor, officiating. Burial will follow at Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst.
